Can a UV Air Purifier Really Make a Difference?

The short answer is yes, but we know that nobody comes to a blog just to get a one-word answer! We are the experts on all things air quality, so we have some interesting data and science to back up that answer.

In truth, UV air purifiers can do a great job at cleaning and purifying the air in your home, eliminating biological contaminants that would otherwise infect you and cause you to feel sick. But in order to understand just how powerful this is, we need to discuss how bad those contaminants can be, what unsafe air feels like, and how a UV air purifier works.

As always, count on our team to install your next air purifier in Kelowna.

How Does a UV Air Purifier Work?

A UV air purifier works by using ultraviolet light to irradiate single-celled organisms, causing them to become unable to reproduce. This amount of UV light is harmless to humans and pets, but it is absolutely devastating to single-celled organisms.

This irradiation works because UV light can penetrate the membrane of a single-celled organism and rupture its DNA. Without the ability to rapidly reproduce, it cannot infect a human or pet host, essentially rendering them harmless. These bacteriophages or virophages usually make us sick when they enter our bodies through our mouth, nose, or eyes, and reproduce. But without the ability to reproduce, they cannot do much and will usually be killed off by our immune systems on first contact.

So, if you are trying to protect your home against mold spores, viruses like the Common Cold, or bacterial infections, a UV air purifier can be a great addition.

An Example of a Bad Contaminant

It is not just about one or two contaminants–any single-celled organism that might harm you can be treated with a UV air purifier. This includes contaminants like COVID-19 that spread through sneezing, coughing, and can travel through your air ducts and HVAC system. A UV light will stop these contaminants in their tracks and make them unable to infect you.

We still recommend customers wash their hands and cover their mouths when they sneeze or cough, but you are statistically less likely to become sick with a UV air purifier treating the air in your home.

How to Completely Treat Your Air

Yes, a UV air purifier can make a huge difference, but it is not a perfect solution on its own. In fact, a UV air purifier can only address biological contaminants like mold spores, viruses, and bacteria. It cannot do much about dust, debris, dirt, pet dander, and other contaminants that might cause an allergic reaction in your family.

Couple your air purifier with an air filtration system if you are looking to maximize your protection and keep your home clean in all aspects. An air filter will catch microscopic particles like dust and dirt, while the air purifier treats the air that is contaminated with biological contaminants. Together, you will be much better off than how you started!
